I thought I'd add to the ugly writers question. hope you're still interested.
 
- Alexander Pope was 4'6" and hunchbacked. I make no comment on his attractiveness or otherwise.
- my English teacher at school always maintained that Laura Riding, who Robert Graves ran off to Majorca with, was "an awful pig of a woman" though I have no evidence of this.
- even when they were being admiring people went out of their way to mention how ugly/smelly/dirty Socrates was.

Will Self is the only writer I can think of who could be put in both
categories of best looking and ugliest writer. I like the look of him, but
many others wouldn't (or do they?) But I guess beauty is subjective, it's
mostly ugliness that all people agree on.
