Here's a supplementary
answer to one of your questions (the Cruise one). There was a film made in
1944 called Between Two Worlds, which was adapted by Sutton Vane for
wartime
audiences (the dead are air-raid victims) from his earlier stage hit Outward
Bound, first produced on Broadway in 1924. I think it may have been filmed
some time in the early 30s as Outward Bound - but - and here's the really
exciting bit - there was a remake issued this year (2005) - see

I acted in Outward Bound
when I was at Cambridge nearly 50 years ago now, playing the part of the
industrialist Lindley of Lindley Limited, with much padding (which I would
not need now).
